Terms of Service
Effective May 26, 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a binding agreement between you and OpenBible (“OpenBible,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing your access to and use of the OpenBible website, mobile apps, and related services (collectively, the “Service”). By creating an account or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
1. The Service
OpenBible lets you read the Bible in multiple versions, annotate verses with personal reflections (text, images, audio, video, and links), and share notes privately, with selected groups, or publicly. We may add, change, or remove features at any time. The Service is offered “as is” and may evolve as we improve it.
2. Eligibility & Accounts
- You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are between 13 and the age of majority where you live, you must have your parent or guardian’s permission.
- You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials confidential and for all activity on your account.
- You agree to provide accurate information and to keep it up to date. We may suspend or terminate accounts that we believe were created using false information or used in violation of these Terms.
3. Your Content
You retain ownership of the notes, reflections, recordings, images, and other material you create or upload through the Service (“Your Content”). You are responsible for Your Content and for the consequences of sharing it.
To operate the Service, you grant OpenBible a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, reproduce, transmit, display, and adapt Your Content solely to: (a) provide the Service to you and the people you choose to share with; (b) make routine backups and ensure reliability; and (c) improve the Service. This licence ends when you delete Your Content or your account, except for content already shared with others (which may persist with those recipients) and short-lived backups that age out.
You represent that you have all rights necessary to grant this licence and that Your Content does not infringe the rights of any third party.
4. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- post content that is unlawful, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, violent, deceptive, or that promotes harm to others;
- impersonate another person or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or organisation;
- upload viruses, scrape data at scale, interfere with the Service, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to any account, system, or network;
- use the Service to send unsolicited messages, advertise, or run commercial schemes without our permission;
- infringe the intellectual-property, privacy, or publicity rights of others.
We may remove content or restrict accounts that, in our reasonable judgment, violate these rules.
5. Intellectual Property
The Service, including its software, design, brand, and original content we provide, is owned by OpenBible or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws. We grant you a personal, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to use the Service in accordance with these Terms. Bible translations included in the Service are used under the terms of the relevant rights-holders and remain the property of those rights-holders.
6. Feedback
If you send us suggestions, ideas, or feedback about the Service, you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use them without restriction or compensation. You are not required to send feedback.
7. Third-Party Services
The Service may link to or rely on third-party platforms (for example, app stores, authentication providers, and our cloud and database vendors). We are not responsible for third-party services and their use is governed by their own terms.
8. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time, and you can delete your account from the in-app settings or by emailing us. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the Service. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (including ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and dispute provisions) will survive.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, or that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure. Your use of the Service is at your own risk.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, OpenBible and its contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, exemplary, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill arising out of or in connection with your use of the Service, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim, or (b) USD 50.
11. Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless OpenBible from and against any claims, damages, liabilities, costs, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to (a) Your Content, (b) your use of the Service, or (c) your violation of these Terms or of any rights of a third party.
12. Changes to the Service or the Terms
We may modify the Service and these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes to these Terms, we will update the “Effective” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Your continued use of the Service after the update means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not agree to a change, you should stop using the Service and may delete your account.
13. Governing Law & Disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which OpenBible is operated, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. You agree that any dispute relating to these Terms or the Service will be brought in the competent courts of that jurisdiction, and you and OpenBible each consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts. Nothing in this section limits any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have under the laws of the country where you reside.
14. Miscellaneous
If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest will remain in effect. Our failure to enforce a right or provision is not a waiver of that right or provision. These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and OpenBible regarding the Service. You may not assign these Terms; we may assign them in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.
