Privacy Policy

Effective May 25, 2026

OpenBible (“OpenBible,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) provides a Bible reading, annotation, and sharing service across the web and mobile apps (the “Service”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the Service you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Account information. When you sign in, we collect identifiers such as your email address, display name, and, where applicable, an avatar image and the authentication provider you used (for example, Apple, Google, or email).
  • Content you create. Notes, reflections, prayers, questions, highlights, bookmarks, and any text, images, audio, video, or links you attach to a verse or share with others.
  • Sharing & relationships. The reading groups, family circles, or individuals you choose to share notes with, and the visibility setting (private, group, public) you select for each note.
  • Usage data. Basic device and app information (operating system, app version, language, approximate region derived from IP) and aggregated analytics such as which passages are opened or which features are used.
  • Diagnostics. Crash logs and error reports used to keep the Service stable. These may include technical identifiers but do not include the content of your private notes.

We do not ask for, and do not knowingly collect, precise location data, contacts, health data, or financial account information.

2. How We Use Information

  • To provide, operate, and improve the Service.
  • To sync your notes and reading progress across your devices and the people you have chosen to share with.
  • To authenticate you, secure your account, and prevent abuse or fraud.
  • To respond to your support requests and to send essential account or security notifications.
  • To understand aggregate usage so we can decide what to build next.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use the content of your notes to train third-party advertising or generative-AI models.

3. How Information Is Shared

We share information only in these limited ways:

  • With people you choose. Notes you mark as shared are visible to the specific groups or individuals you select. Public notes are visible to anyone who uses the Service.
  • Service providers. We use a small number of trusted vendors to host data and run the Service — including Supabase (database, authentication, and storage) and our cloud hosting provider. These vendors process data only under our instructions and under their own published privacy and security commitments.
  • Legal reasons. We may disclose information if required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the safety, rights, or property of our users or the public.
  • Business changes. If OpenBible is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset transfer, information may be transferred as part of that transaction; we will notify you of any material change in how your information is handled.

4. Data Retention

We retain your account information and the content you create for as long as your account is active. When you delete a note, it is removed from the Service; short-lived backups may persist for up to 30 days before being overwritten. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it to comply with a legal obligation or resolve disputes.

5. Your Choices & Rights

  • Access & export. You can view and export your notes from within the app.
  • Correction. You can edit your profile and your notes at any time.
  • Deletion. You can delete individual notes, or delete your entire account, from the account settings screen. You can also request deletion by emailing us at the address below.
  • Regional rights (EEA, UK, California, and others). Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights to access, correct, port, or restrict the processing of your personal information, and to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority. Contact us to exercise these rights.

6. Security

We use industry-standard safeguards — including encryption in transit (TLS), encryption at rest for our database and storage, access controls, and routine review of our infrastructure — to protect your information. No internet service can guarantee perfect security, but we work to keep the Service safe and to notify affected users in the event of a material data incident, as required by law.

7. Children

The current OpenBible app is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. A dedicated kids experience is in development; when it launches, it will follow age-appropriate practices and applicable child-privacy laws (including COPPA and GDPR-K), and will have its own clearly labelled privacy notice. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

8. International Users

OpenBible is operated from facilities in the United States and other regions where our service providers are based. By using the Service you understand that your information may be processed in countries other than your own, which may have different data protection rules. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) for cross-border transfers.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Effective” date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Your continued use of the Service after the update means you accept the revised policy.

10. Contact Us
